The Colorado sun was setting behind the majestic Rockies, slanting golden streamers of light across the Mile High City, as John Brockman rode up the circle drive in the Carroll yard and swung from the saddle. He noted Breanna’s buggy—borrowed from Dr. Goodwin—parked next to the Langan buggy. He could hear the happy laughter of the children coming from inside the house.

The front door stood open, and as the tall man stepped up on the porch, the aroma of hot food met his nostrils and made his mouth water. He lifted the heavy knocker and let it drop, which brought an instant response from inside. Molly Kate came running down the hall, calling over her shoulder, “I’ll get it, Mama! It has to be Uncle John!”

When she reached the foyer, she saw the outline of the man through the screen door. “Hi, Uncle John!” she said excitedly, her blond curls bouncing on her shoulders. “Come in.”

John stepped through the door and gathered Molly Kate into his arms. “How about a big hug?” he asked.

The sweet child hugged him and kissed his cheek.

“Oh, a kiss, too?” he said.

Molly Kate giggled. “I thought since Aunt Breanna won’t let very many ladies kiss you, I’d keep you supplied, Uncle John.”

Brockman laughed and set her down as the rest of the children came down the hall, calling their greetings to him. John greeted them individually, making each child feel special.

As they headed toward the hall, Matt appeared on the winding staircase, and Breanna showed herself at the other end of the hall, holding a dish towel in her hands. “Hello, darling,” she called. “Some welcoming committee you have there!”

“I’ll say!”

“We’ve got Curt out here in the kitchen, carving the turkey. If you can get away from your admirers, come on back.”

Matt went on to the kitchen while John looked down at Nathan Langan’s abundant supply of freckles and mussed his hair. “Nathan,” he said, “where’d you get those freckles?”

The boy shrugged. “I don’t know.”

“Well, I know,” said John. “At the freckle store!”

Susan Langan laughed. “Oh, Mr. John. There aren’t any stores where you buy freckles!”

“Well, where’d he get them, then?”

“I don’t have as many as Nathan, Uncle John,” spoke up Molly Kate, “but Mama told me that I got mine when I was real little. She said when I was asleep one night, an angel came into my room and painted the freckles on my nose.”

Jared Langan elbowed his little brother. “As many freckles as you have, Nathan, it must have taken a hundred angels to paint them on in just one night!”

James grinned at his sister and said, “Well, Molly Kate, the angel who painted your freckles on must’ve run out of paint, ’cause he used most of it on Nathan!”

An impish look gleamed in Nathan’s eye as he retorted, “Well, at least he thought Molly Kate and I were important enough to paint!”

“Hold on!” said the tall man. “I didn’t mean to start trouble, here. Why don’t you kids go back to
